Media Statement For Immediate Release
Muslim Professionals Forum (MPF) Calls for Immediate Cessation of the Massacre in Egypt
16 August, 2013
Cairo’s Ramadan killings of 100 innocent protestors now pales in comparison to the brutal military crackdown on pro-Morsi supporters in Rabaa al-Adawiya Square and Giza’s Nahda Square on 14 August 2013.
Egypt’s FJP (Freedom and Justice Party) spokesman says the death toll was at least 1,000 and another 10,000 persons seriously injured (mortality figures ranged between 421 as reported by the Egyptian Ministry of Health and 2,000 as reported by Al-Quds TV). Amongst the dead included independent journalists and cameramen covering the tragic events. Other members of the media have been arrested and their equipment confiscated.
Egyptian troops stormed the field hospital in Rabaa al-Adawiya Square housing all the dead bodies in their attempts to conceal the number of deaths. Eyewitness accounts claimed that ambulances were shot at while trying to access the square to reach the injured.
The current illegitimate interim government portrays the present situation as a political impasse and many in the world are falsely led to believe this. By its apathy and silence on the coup d’etat and earlier killings, the international community has lent credence to the interim administration and has been complicit in encouraging the military to execute its deadly assault on innocent civilians. The abject failure of the international community to uphold the basic tenets of democracy and human rights in Egypt has been both directly and indirectly responsible for this bloody massacre. Some nations in the west and petro-monarchies of the Gulf have even bankrolled this military carnage.
Unless the current wave of indiscriminate military action and civil resistance is not halted, Egypt seems destined for a vicious downward spiral into chaos and anarchy, which is not in the interest of any peace loving individual, community and nation.
Taking into cognizance of the deadly military insurgence and the escalating violence and unrest in Egypt, Muslim Professionals Forum (MPF) urges:
1. The democratic peoples of the world, who believe in free and fair elections and the legitimacy that democracy brings, to condemn in no uncertain terms the horrific acts of killing of innocent civilians by the security forces.
2. The killings to be stopped immediately and the Army to return to the military barracks where they rightly belong, not in the political space of democratically elected civilians.
3. The democratically elected president to be reinstated immediately.
4. The parliament and elected lawmakers to immediately reassume their legislative duties to uphold the sanctity of the Egyptian constitution. Muslim Professionals Forum MPF)) calls upon the Malaysian government to:
5. Condemn the military carnage in Egypt and call for the cessation of killings and atrocities against peaceful protestors.
6. Denounce the coup d’etat and the illegitimate interim government and urge the reinstatement of the democratically elected president and lawmakers.
7. Influence the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC) to review Egypt’s membership.
8. Urge the UN Security Council to expedite international efforts to end the massacre.
