SAVE AL-QUDS CAMPAIGN

Middle East Monitor report, 30 October 2014
Representatives of more than 60 charities from 27 countries have gathered in Doha to raise funds for the redevelopment of the Gaza Strip and other aid for Palestinians. Delegates at the “First Humanitarian Forum to Support Palestinians” organised by the Qatar Charity are spending two days discussing the catastrophe facing Palestinians, not only in the besieged Gaza Strip but also the refugee camps in neighbouring countries. [Kia Ora Gaza’s international solidarity aid partners are attending this important forum, including Viva Palestina Malaysia. Editor].
The forum is being held under the auspices of the Prime Minister of Qatar, HE Shaikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani, who attended the opening session on Wednesday. The need to disseminate information about the humanitarian crisis facing Palestinians, particularly but not exclusively in Gaza, is paramount following Israel’s latest invasion and ongoing military crackdown across the occupied Palestinian territories.
Pleas to lift the crippling siege on the Gaza Strip have fallen largely on deaf ears, one speaker told the audience, and with Egypt destroying the tunnels described by Western journalists as “Gaza’s lifeline”, the people of the coastal territory face enormous difficulties, with even basic necessities in chronic short supply. “This,” he added, “is no less than collective punishment, but who is holding Israel to account? While support for Israel from the US and EU is to be expected, why are China and Russia silent about what is happening to the Palestinians?”
While most attention has been focused on Gaza, for obvious reasons, the charities were reminded that the situation in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem is also dire. Israel’s Judaisation policies in the Holy City have driven away almost two-thirds of the Christian population, said another speaker. Addressing the conference via a pre-recorded video message, the Imam of Al-Aqsa Mosque pointed out that the Israelis are undermining the Islamic identity of Jerusalem by their policies. Shaikh Dr Ikrama Sabri told delegates that this is not a Palestinian issue alone; it should be a major concern for all of the world’s 1 billion Muslims.
Appreciation was expressed at the support given by the government of Qatar not only in Palestine but also other areas of the world facing humanitarian disasters. Information about the relief efforts of the Qatar Charity was given to the forum participants, who are being urged to mobilise and donate as much as possible for Palestinians in desperate need.

Sweden to become first major European country to recognize state of Palestine

REUTERS – Sweden’s new center-left government will recognize the state of Palestine in a move that will make it the first major European country to take the step, Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said on Friday.
The UN General Assembly approved the de facto recognition of the sovereign state of Palestine in 2012 but the European Union and most EU countries, have yet to give official recognition.
“The conflict between Israel can only be solved with a two-state solution, negotiated in accordance with international law,” Swedish PM Stefan Lofven said during his inaugural address in parliament.
“A two-state solution requires mutual recognition and a will to peaceful co-existence. Sweden will therefore recognize the state of Palestine.”
For the Palestinians, Sweden’s move will be a welcome boost for its ambitions.
With its reputation as an honest broker in international affairs and with an influential voice in EU foreign policy, the decision may well make other countries sit up and pay attention at a time when the Palestinians are threatening unilateral moves towards statehood.
However, there is likely to be strong criticism of Sweden from Israel, as well as from the United States and the EU, which maintain that an independent Palestinian state should only emerge through a negotiated process.
Within the EU, some countries, such as Hungary, Poland and Slovakia recognize Palestine, but they did so before joining the 28-member bloc.
If the center-left government fulfills its plans, Sweden would be the first country to recognize Palestine while being a member of the European Union.
The Social Democrats and Greens hold a minority of seats in parliament and the incoming center-left government is likely to be one of Sweden’s weakest for decades.
The former center-right government would not recognize Palestine as the Palestinian authorities did not control their territory.
The Palestinians want an independent state in the West Bank and Gaza, with its capital in East Jerusalem. While Gaza’s boundaries are clearly defined, the precise territory of what would constitute Palestine in the West Bank and East Jerusalem will only be determined via negotiations with Israel on a two-state solution, negotiations which are currently suspended.

VPM song @ our KLPFF 6-7 Sep 2014
Written, composed and arranged by prominent artistes but more importantly by those who share the passion for a free Palestine.
The video composition took us longer than expected as the editor had to take multiple breaks as it was too much for him, emotionally. One of the girls in the video look exactly like a daughter of his.
I cry & bleed inside whenever I hear the song. The tears of the dead child remains etched forever in our memories & God willing inspire us to do more to end the occupation & free Palestine!

The Edge Malaysia: 3rd KLPFF 2014 – A film festival with a cause
3rd Kuala Lumpur Palestine Film Festival 2014
6-7 Sep 2014

THE scene opens with men and women dressed in traditional Arabian garb, typically associated with the Muslim faith, entering a church. They are Catholics and in the scene, they observe the order of a mass being conducted,
using Arabic bibles.
This was the first few scenes in the documentary The Stones Cry Out — one of four films to be screened at the Kuala Lumpur Palestine Film Festival 2014 (KLPFF) to be held this weekend at Publika, Kuala Lumpur.
The scene — and the entire 50 minutes of the film — as director Yasmine Perni intended it to be, was thoughtprovoking, to say the least.
Speaking to the media at a press conference, Perni says she wanted to highlight the fact that for more than 60 years, the Palestinans — both the Christians and Muslims — had suffered displacement, expulsion, wars, occupation and oppression, particularly in the conflict zone of the Gaza strip.
As such, she believes, the voices of Palestinian Christians have all too often been drowned out in the turmoil of events. The Stones Cry Out, Perni adds, is their story, in their voices, from the Nakba of 1948 until today.
Told through the eyes of those who lived through the horror, the first 20 minutes of the documentary set the tone for what can be expected for the rest of the movie. Perni said that she made the film for two reasons; one was to create awareness that Christians exist in the Palestine populations.
“They (Christians) are very much a part of the fabric of Palestinian society. Very often they are forgotten.
“They live in the same villages, speak the same language and follow the same education system. They are one people, basically. And to try to divide them is counterproductive and in fact, has backfired,” Perni told journalists.
The other reason was to break stereotypes. She wanted to show Palestinians in their daily life, as opposed to the constant footage and pictures of them being viewed as poor, refugees or terrorists.
“I want to show what Palestine was before 1948. They owned houses, cars, farms and what everybody else had. The poor, downtrodden pictures that you see now are the reaction of the 66year conflict, but that was not how they were before,” she stressed.
Perni, is just one of the four invited guests that will be in town for this weekend’s festival. The other invited guests for KLPFF 2014 are social activist, political analyst and author of The Gaza Kitchen Laila ElHaddad, Sameeha Elwan who is contributing writer to the book ‘Remember Us’, and Seba Asmaa, a photographer whose works will be on exhibit during the festival.
KLPFF will be held 11am8.30pm on Saturday (Sept 6) and 10.30am5pm on Sunday (Sept 7). Among the activities are cooking demos, a book launch, book reading, dance performances and of course, free screening of three other Palestinian movies. While to watch the movies are free, donations are always welcomed.
This is the third instalment of the KLPFF, organised by Viva Palestina Malaysia (VPM). To date, VPM has raised an estimated RM7.5 million to finance various medical, educational, microfinancing, and women’s projects in Gaza to provide emergency relief.
Like other years, donations to KLPFF are chanelled towards humanitarian efforts but this year, VPM decided to expand its festival to more than just filmscreening. Visitors to KLPFF 2014 are encouraged to partake in efforts to help Gaza by purchasing clothes, accessories and food in the Bazaar for Gaza.
Among the main objectives of this year’s KLPFF are to create awareness of the Palestinian struggles through cinema, arts and culture, to raise funds for the purchase of medical and ambulance facilities and to fund the second phase of the Rebuilding of Gaza.
Omar which was a nominee for this year’s Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language category, will also be screened at the festival.
