In Defense of Erdogan and the AKP

In Defense of Erdogan and the AKP

Dr Jeffery Abu Hassan, Dato’ Dr Musa Mohd Nordin

Board of Directors, Muslim Professionals Forum

Much has been written about the political impasse in the Turkish capital. More recently commentaries and opinions have been  expressed in the local media extrapolating the recent events as symptomatic of Erdogan’s autocratic rule  and taking AKP to task for its failure to exemplify itself as authentic Islamic democrats.   The complexity of the turn of events in Taksim Square should not exempt us from rationally examining history and contemporary evidence in our shared quest to separate fact from fiction.

What initially began as a small protest against the uprooting of a few trees grew into a protest of a few thousands. The supposedly “Green Protest” needs to be contrasted against the AKP Green Project which have  planted in excess of 3 million trees across Turkey since it came to power and for this PM Erdogan was honoured with  the UN Habitat award.

Any discerning political analyst worth his salt would have immediately understood that the protest first mooted by the environmentalist have been politically hijacked by opposition parties and anarchists – it does not require rocket science to fathom this equation!

These political opportunists abused the democratic space and illegitimately expressed their hostilities  against a prime minister and Party that has been elected democratically and with increasing majorities for three consecutive terms. No government elected on such a convincing mandate would tolerate any form of  illegitimate means  to undermine public order, attack the police and destroy public and private property. Even minority governments would not condone such public display of vandalism and atrocities. The Occupy Movement in the US and the demonstrations against the G8 meetings have all been handled the same way but when it happens in Turkey it is exaggerated to such an outlandish degree. Is this an unconscious expression of one’s Islamophobic traits? As it is we have one too many of such nuances in both the international and local print media.

PM Erdogan and his senior government officials  have met  the protesters and both parties  have  agreed to put the issue of the park to a referendum for the residents of Istanbul, pending a court decision. PM Erdogan in no uncertain terms stated that a full investigation would be undertaken to examine if excessive force had been used by the police force. How much more democratic can you get?

Turkey took its first loan from the IMF in 1961. When the AKP came to power, Turkey owed the IMF US$23.5 billion.  She has now repaid all her  loans to the IMF and is now a net lender rather than a borrower to the fund when she recently pledged US$5 billion to the IMF to help with the European crisis. Turkey has since reduced its government debt to 40% of GDP from 78% when Erdogan took office in 2002. As stressed by the deputy Prime Minister, Ali Babacan, with an inflation rate at its lowest since the last 44 years, a 1 million rise in employment, near zero interest rate and improved credit ratings, Turkey must be doing something right. With the looming economic meltdown in the EU, one   just wonders who is today the “sick man of Europe.”

In the international arena Turkey is the only country  that has stood against the illegitimate Israeli occupation of Palestine putting to shame all the  democracies in the modern world and its agencies. This she did  openly via the Mavi Marmara flotilla, PM Erdogan’s standoff against Peres at the World Economic Summit, Davos and it’s support  for the many fledgling democracies that have mushroomed in the Middle East.

On Sunday, 16 June 2013,  a million people rallied in support of PM Erdogan and the AKP. This was a fact that has gone  unnoticed, not surprisingly in the sensation-seeking foreign press. (http://english.sabah.com.tr/national/2013/06/17/erdogan-addresses-rally-in-kazlicesme-in-a-massive-showing-of-support)

Thus the problem is not with the Islamic democrats.

As in Egypt, the problem lies with the reactionary, ultra secular regimes who have been overthrown by the  masses in free and fair elections. These are  the beneficiaries of the previous non-democratic regimes corrupted to the core, milking the nation’s wealth for their self-aggrandizement. These are the irreligious politicans and their cronies  who would like to maintain their lavish lifestyles that are not compatible with the majority. These are the minorities that are bent on wreaking tyranny on the majority. They desire to continue looting the nation’s wealth and continue business as usual but the Arab Spring has thrashed them into the bin of history. To paraphrase Martin Luther King, Junior; “The arc of the moral universe is long but it always bends towards justice.”

Both Turkey and Egypt have massive bureaucracies and judiciaries that continue to be beholden to the previous regimes. In Egypt the Judiciary has cancelled virtually all the elections  which the Muslim Brotherhood has won convincingly. They have won five of the elections since the overthrow of Mubarak but their legitimacy is still doubted and progress for the country is stymied by these political reactionaries. Elections outlawed calls for new elections and millions of dollars that is scarce in Egypt.

President Morsi is not yet a year in power and there are already voices for his removal. He had won fairly and squarely in the first elections post Mubarak.

Those who screamed for the ballot box now do not agree with the results. Is it democracy only when the liberal and secular minority wins? Is it democracy only when foreign powers gives its stamp of approval?  The military coup to deprive the pivotal Islamic Salvation Front ballot box victory in Algeria in 1992 and more recently Hamas in Palestine are just 2 cases in point.

The AKP in Turkey despite having won convincingly was nearly outlawed by the judiciary and thus the will of the people was to be sidelined for the sake of the minority.

A virtual collapse of Turkey’s economy and gross violations of human rights was the order of the day during the years  preceding 2002.  Since PM Erdogan took office,  a steady reduction of these abuses and violations were kick-started.  On-going efforts are in place to replace the Constitution dictated by the military junta with a democratic one. Peace process has recently been in place that has witnessed no major clashes with the Kurdish Workers Party (deemed as terrorist by Turkey, the US and Europe). The loud accusations regarding productive rights, abortions, alcohol sales, freedom of immodesty in public and the government’s efforts to Islamisize Turkey holds no water.

Unlike in the US where Bibles are a common item in a hotel room, one will not find Qurans in hotels in Turkey. Catholic schools in Ontario are state funded, but not Islamic schools in Turkey.  In Finland, no sale of liquor is allowed between 10pm to 6am while in Taksim Square one can see liquor being sold 9pm to 9am.  Yes, there are limitations on liquor advertising.  But how is that different from the US?

Ten (10) years is very much  a short period of time to undo a country that has experienced four (4) military coups against the popularly elected governments between 1960 and 1997 under the guise of the Ataturk legacy, that practiced autocratic rules.

As the Turkish foreign minister puts it,

“Elections are the only way to change a democratically elected government. Our party has built a first-rate democracy that we value more than ever – since 1950; legitimate governments have been toppled four times from outside the political sphere. We represent the will of the people, and our political power is the power of all of our citizens.”

Thus the problem again is not with the Islamic Democrats. They were voted into power by the rules of the game but when they won, the rules are changed and the goal post moved to make life as difficult as possible and not to allow them the liberty to go ahead with  nation building. In some countries they are not even allowed the prospect of gaining power by the  politics of gerrymandering and electoral fraud. The secular fear of Islamic democrats and democrats in general is so perverse that the lay person is indoctrinated to the hilt and bribed handsomely to vote against them. And when they do by some miracle get to power, the bureaucrats and supporters of previous regimes make life hell for them. I suspect this scenario is much familiar to many amongst us!

The outright fact remains that that this AKP government has presided over the most successful era in Turkish politics for well over 100 years. The ultra- seculars in Turkish politics are completely oblivious of the fact that for 60 years when Turkey was under their  charge, its prestige and power had declined to levels lower than meat in a Doner Kebab. They closed religious schools,  banned hijabs and imprisoned members of Islamic organisations.  Are these just some of the “freedoms” which the protesters now miss?

PM Erdogan had to  serve 120 days of a 10-month prison sentence for simply reciting this poem:

“Our minarets are our bayonets,

Our domes are our helmets,

Our mosques are our barracks.

We will put a final end to ethnic segregation.

No one can ever intimidate us.

If the skies and the ground were to open against us.

If floods and volcanoes were to burst, We will not turn from our mission.

My reference is Islam. If I am not able to speak of this, What is the use of living?”

The higher than average levels of imprisonment of journalists however needs to be addressed by the AKP. Apart from this blemish, PM Erdogan has  in a relatively short space of time recorded a stellar political report card. He has won a convincing majority at the ballot box for every election in the last 10 years. Against all odds he restricted the power of the coup-happy army. He virtually ended the perpetual Turkish war against the Kurds. On most occasions he was the first world leader to stand  firm with the masses in their democratic expressions against the autocratic regimes from Tunisia to Syria. Despite the current hyped trials and tribulations, in our opinion PM Erdogan and the AKP still represent the best examples of Islamist democrats there are.

But in the protesters narrative, now echoed by some political analysts, only one thing matters. If you are for Islam – they are against you. The protests in Turkey are simply put, a desperate attempt to instigate a coup against a democratically elected civilian government. They are the last sigh of a secular liberal elite who have realized far too late that the future does not belong to them anymore. The future belongs to Islam.

MEDIA STATEMENT: Gabungan Bertindak Malaysia (GBM) Calls for Immediate Implementation of IPCMC

Media Statement For Immediate Release

Gabungan Bertindak  Malaysia (GBM) Calls for Immediate Implementation of IPCMC

4 June, 2013

These days Malaysians go to bed with the shocking news of a custodial death only to wake the next morning to learn of another death in police custody. The custodians of law and order must take full responsibility for these custodial deaths.

From January 14 to June 1, 2013, eight custodial deaths have been reported. According to the chief of the police force these are apparently “unfortunate”. Referring to the latest death in IPD Tampin, the IGP Khalid Abu Bakar had reportedly said in a text-message to The Malay Mail, “It’s just unfortunate that he died in our lock-up.”

In this connection, the Minister of Home Affairs had earlier said that he had to be careful about taking action against the police in order to ensure that it would not have any demoralising effect on the police force.

GBM regards both these statements as unbecoming of leaders who are duty bound to protect the people of this country and condemn them for being insensitive and indifferent towards the preservation of precious lives.

GBM notes with utter disgust that the wanton cruelty of the police personnel towards their victims has been so prominent all these years that a Royal Commission had to be set up in 2005 which among others concluded that deaths in the lock-ups are “a serious cause for concern”.

The Royal Commission produced 125 recommendations to clean up the police force, the most important  being the setting up of an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC).

Almost eight years have passed, but the government has not shown any inclination to establish the IPCMC, which, in the opinion of GBM, legitimises the police force to continue with its wayward ways.

GBM, an alliance of 25 NGOs, fervently believes that this state of affairs cannot be allowed to continue and calls upon the government to undertake the following actions without any further delays or excuses:

(1) To implement the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) as proposed by the Royal Commission of Inquiry immediately. There should be no overt or covert attempts to weaken the authority or terms of reference of the IPCMC.

(2) To undertake speedily all the other recommendations made by the Royal Commission of Inquiry. A schedule of implementation of the recommendations should be prepared by the Government for adoption by Parliament.

(3) To appoint the Inspector-General of Police (IGP)  as recommended by an independent Selection Board consisting of a representative from the Home Ministry, retired judges, retired senior police officers, SUHAKAM commissioners, representatives of the Bar Council and other civil society organizations. If the recommendation is not accepted by the Home Minister, it should be automatically referred to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs for hearing and decision making.

(4) To decentralize the Police Force from its present centralized authority, and to move the Federal Constitution provision relating to the police from the Federal List to the Concurrent List. At present, the police is exclusively emplaced within the Federal jurisdiction. This has led to the politicization of the police. The greatest benefit from decentralizing the police is that it allows local public feedback to be better incorporated into police work. This tie-up will ensure more effective crime prevention, and will definitely have a positive impact on police work.

(5) To take immediate action to arrest and charge all police personnel involved in the latest series of custodial deaths. Only through a swift and transparent judicial process will it enable the police force to clear its name!

GBM AGAINST RACISM- IN MALAYSIA!

Media Statement

9 May, 2013

GBM AGAINST RACISM- IN MALAYSIA!

Gabungan Bertindak Malaysia (GBM), a multi-ethnic, multi-religious and non-partisan organisation  representing 25 NGOs is greatly concerned with the characterisation of the Pakatan Rakyat’s  gains in the recent elections as a “Chinese tsunami” by the Prime Minister YB Dato’ Seri Mohd Najib Abdul Razak.

It has since been echoed by the Utusan Malaysia and various facebook entries. The Utusan Malaysia, 7 May 2013, carried the headline, “Apa lagi Cina Mau?” (What else do the Chinese want?). This and other similar entries would undoubtedly instigate hostility of the Malay community against the Chinese.

Prime Minister Mohd Najib Abdul Razak defence of Utusan Malaysia’s racial innuendos is most unbecoming.

The election outcome shows a BN winning only 47.38% of the popular votes. This poor showing cannot be entirely due to the Chinese voters alone.

Notwithstanding gains in Kedah, UMNO’s support base has been eroded substantially in Johor, Melaka and Pahang, where two outgoing Menteri Besar/Chief Minister and two deputy ministers were deposed. Similarly, there was a strong Kadazandusun swing against the BN, resulting in the opposition’s seat gains increase from 1 to 12 in the state legislative assembly. If there was indeed a Chinese tsunami, how could Chua Jui Meng the PKR candidate for Segamat, a Chinese majority constituency, be defeated by a Barisan candidate of Indian origin?

The majority of the voting population of this country had rejected the Barisan Nasional and the leadership of Dato’ Seri Mohd Najib Abdul Razak last Sunday on polling day. He failed to achieve the two-thirds majority in Parliament. The results of the general election clearly indicated the absence of any tsunami unleashed by any particular ethnic group. If what the Malaysian electorate did on last Sunday at the polling stations could be described as a tsunami, then it was truly a “Malaysian tsunami”. Alternatively, considering the fact that BN lost all state capitals except Kangar and Johor Bahru, one may conclude that this was an “urban tsunami” where BN was protected only by the digital gap in the rural areas.

In a proportional representation system instead of the first-past-the-post, Malaysia would have had somebody else sworn in as prime minister instead of Dato’ Seri Mohd Najib.

It is a matter of great concern to all of us in GBM and the people at large that after 56 years of independence and the contributions by each and every one of us to make Malaysia a magnificent country for all irrespective of ethnicity, religion, culture, language, class and gender, we have leaders from UMNO who still repeat the same old ethnic or racial themes.

We in GBM are unanimous in our considered opinion that such racist remarks by Dato’ Seri Mohd Najib, as leader of UMNO and Prime Minister, is inappropriate of him as leader of the country.

We urge the Prime Minister to be a model for all the citizens of the country and refrain from uttering racist remarks to cover up the failures of BN’s political governance that is ailing these great nations of ours. His racist post-election sentiment is undoing whatever credit his “One Malaysia” concept may have accrued.

Use and Abuse of the Freedom of Speech Discourse

20 September 2012

Use and Abuse of the Freedom of Speech Discourse

The violent consequences of past artistic, literary and cultural aggressions against the sanctity of Islam and the prophet seemed to have not taught us any lessons. The abomination against theism continues  unabated. Claiming to be works of literature or the arts, the perpetrators have guised behind the cloak of freedom of  speech. The notoriety against Islam has been littered with the likes of  Salman Rushdie’s despicable Satanic Verses, through to the ugly Danish cartoons and the latest “film” which has maliciously maligned prophet Muhammad. Caricatures of the prophet have today headlined the French press. The pristine beliefs of Christianity, Judaism and Hinduism have similarly not been spared  this  irreligious onslaught.

These vulgar and blasphemous  provocations are  intent on mocking the believers reverence of their religious text, tenets and their prophets. Specific individuals and interest groups are unashamedly abusing our noble values of freedom of speech and expression to tarnish the image of authentic religions, demonizing it and demeaning its prophets with trails of untruths and unfounded claims.

In response to the film “Innocence of Muslims”, the Muslim in the street  is reacting in the only way he knows, defending the honour of the one Muslims hold high. However, the irrational and emotional reactions by some Muslims and the violence unleashed, with consequent deaths, injuries and damage to property is most un-Islamic and distant from the Islamic teachings of peace, justice and fair-play. Producing cheap and vulgar “works of art” designed to offend Muslims is easy and is guaranteed to secure instant, even if fleeting fame. Therefore our responses to sacrilegious acts that is likely to recur should be based on the wisdom and humanity that the prophet of Islam has taught us.

This unrelenting siege on all religions and her prophets must cease. Governments, civil society, religious leaders  and icons in the literary and film industry must be courageous to condemn these irresponsible few and  prohibit the publication and showing of films and literary works of a similar nature.

More urgently, we must not allow Muslim zealots, from political platforms or religious groups  to seize the moment and  inflame further this most fragile of situations. Fellow Muslims need to understand that Islam doesn’t need us to defend it, it only needs us to represent it faithfully and authentically.  We call on all to exercise  wisdom and humanity and treat one another with respect and dignity.

PM must curb violence or be seen as complicit, say groups

Hazlan Zakaria

Over 70 civil society organisations today called upon Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to take action against political hooliganism mushrooming in the country, or stand accused of condoning such violence and being in bed with its thuggish perpetrators.

NONE“If the political violence continues due to the alleged impunity granted by the police, the PM will be perceived as being complicit in these acts of violence and intimidation,” said the groups in a joint statement read out at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

The groups came forward to express their alarm that the worrisome trend of “contrived violence”, which they believe is being engineered to suppress free democratic discourse and political choice in the run-up to the 13th general election.

Such political intimidation and violence, the groups claim, will undermine the very fabric of society and its freedoms if left unchecked.

NONEThey pointed to the attacks on ceramah held by NGO Asalkan Bukan Umno and during the political speeches by PKR leaders Nurul Izzah Anwar and her father Anwar Ibrahim, as signs of the worrying trend.

They called upon Najib to ensure that the home ministry and police take proper action against those who have committed such violence against civil activists and legitimate political organisations, including suspending, investigating and punishing errant police officers whose alleged inaction during some of the disturbances have painted an ugly picture of the police, the guardians of public order.

Zaid Kamaruddin of Jemaah Islah Malaysia, a NGO which was formed in the 70s, said in a statement today that the group will send a memorandum to the PM, the home minister and the police, during the week as they await to record from more NGOs who have expressed their support.

Meanwhile, A Jayanath of civil society group Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia appealed to Malaysians to remember the preamble to the Rukunegara, which most importantly calls for upholding the constitution, rule of law and practicing good conduct and proper manners.

All the three seem to have been forgotten as the constitutionally guaranteed freedom to assemble is being restricted and some are acting beyond the law and abandoning manners and good conduct.

penang fracas during himpunan hijau rally journalistsMas Elati Seman from the Centre for Independent Journalism chimed in that police should also ensure the people’s safety during rallies and demonstrations as this may impact journalists on the ground who will have to face the rowdy atmosphere at political ceramah and rallies.

Making it safe for society also means keeping things safe for journalists as they have to carry out their job to brings news of what is happening to the general public.

The groups also repeated their call for the IPCMC to be instituted to ensure that the police can be properly monitored and reprimanded if they are found neglecting their duty of maintaining public order.

They, however, praised police for their excellent job in facilitating the Himpunan Hijau 2.0 gatherings across the country, though they believe that the force could have done better, especially during the fracas in the Penang leg of the green rally which was disrupted by a group alleged to include Umno and Perkasa members.

Other civil society groups represented at the press conference included the Kuala Lumpur Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall, the Negeri Sembilan Chinese Assembly Hall, All Women’s Action Movement, the Tamil Foundation, Anak Muda Sarawak and Tenaganita.

Press Statement: Malaysians must rise up to stop the Peaceful Assembly Bill 2011

The Plan of Action for Malaysia (PoAM) Coalition urges the Government to immediately withdraw the Peaceful Assembly Bill, which is unconstitutional and more repressive than the existing Police Act.

PoAM urges the public to join the protests organised by Kempen Kebebasan Berhimpun (KKB), the Bar Council and other civil society groups as well as overseas Malaysians against this act. The events scheduled so far are:

1.       Vigil: (a) 26th November, Saturday 7.30pm, Dataran Merdeka

2.       Walk: (a) 26th November, Saturday 2-3pm, KLCC park near water fountain; (b) 29th November, Tuesday, 11.30am, Lake Club to Parliament

3.       Public Forum: 29th November, Tuesday, 8pm, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall

PoAM reminds the public that in 1981, the then new Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad too attempted to amend the Societies Act to cripple political participation of associations, but the amendment was defeated by a united front of civil society groups coming from all backgrounds.

PoAM is therefore confident the bill will have to be withdrawn or be rendered unenforceable if the public pressure continues to mount.

PoAM holds that the hefty fines of RM 10,000 for assembly organisers who fail to notify the police 30 days in advance and RM 20,000 for assembly participants who fail to disperse as instructed by the police are proposed in bad faith. This is in fact much worse than the Peaceful Assembly and Procession Bill passed by Myanmar which requires only 5 days notification to the police.

Such fines are beyond the means of average Malaysians and are meant to silence ordinary Malaysians from middle and lower class backgrounds. Such fines can also be used to disqualify elected representatives, in the hope that this will deter them from joining the public.

In our opinion, if the People allow this bill to be passed, the people will not be able to hold any  demonstration or  rally to express their opinion in most urban areas.  Under the law, Assemblies are prohibited within a 50-meter radius from petrol stations, police stations, religious places, schools and eight other categories of “prohibited areas”, most of which are commonly found in urban centre.

It is PoAM considered view that when governments are protected from criticism, they will have little incentive to check corruption, arrest power abuse and reverse unpopular policies. This will eventually lead to political instability and conflict.

PoAM calls upon the government to withdraw the proposed Bill immediately and to consult major stakeholders including civil society   before retabling the Bill.

PoAM feels that if the Peaceful Assembly Bill in its current form is passed, is a potential time bomb that can result in societal disharmony and chaos. This is something that all right-minded Malaysians do not desire and would rise to prevent.

MPF Press Release – Death Threats to BERSIH organisers

24th June 2011

We the undersigned board members of MPF read with horror and disbelief   the open threats  to commit murder on proponents of BERSIH 2 March planned for 9 July 2011.

Rhetorics and posturing are part and parcel of an active democracy, but any threat of violence is malicious  and jeopardises the peaceful co-existence of all  in this beloved country of ours

Regardless of one’s feelings about the correctness or otherwise of the planned gathering on 9 July 2011, nobody other than the insane or racial supremacist will be in agreement with the obnoxious wave of highly coordinated text messages aimed at  Dato’ Ambiga and her like minded colleagues.

The inaction of the relevant authorities does not bode well for an otherwise peaceful and harmonious Malaysia. Failure to apprehend and charge the culprit with intent to murder will be dereliction of duty of the highest order.

The silence of the national leaders in the face of this racist and deplorable death threat is  also cause for concern. All Malaysians who love this country must unequivocally condemn this dastardly and cowardly act of extreme provocation.

The royal houses whose existence depends on continued peace in Malaysia must also be in unison in unreservedly condemning this vicious threat to the very fabric of  our pluralistic society.

We, members of civil society have had enough of the escalating threats by individuals and groups who have increasingly upped the ante on pursuing their parochial and racist agenda. Unless genuine political will deals firmly with such racial supremacist provocations, the slogan 1Malaysia will paradoxically be long  remembered as an era of “heightened racial tension” and “intense religious conflict”.

Additional funds came in through generous donations and sale of  VPM paraphernalia  at Masjid Negara, Masjid Wilayah and the Shah Alam pasar tani.  The association of wives and female staff of Telekom Malaysia contributed RM5, 000. Anonymous donors banked various amounts direct into VPM’s account. VPM  is very grateful to everyone who has made possible the first phase of this global mission.
We now enter the second phase; the actual road trip. It’s going to be a long and hard few weeks for our volunteers as they drive the aid laden vehicles from London through France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Syria, Egypt and God willing into Gaza by October 10th. We ask all Malaysians to pray for the safe, speedy and successful delivery of this aid to the besieged people of Gaza and the safe return of all our volunteers.

Viva Palestina Malaysia is proud  to be a part of this momentous event and join the growing voices around the world  to proclaim:

FREE PALESTINE

END THE OCCUPATION

It is extremely important that this international convoy is supported and highly publicised. Apart from the delivery of much needed humanitarian aid & highlighting the blockade’s damaging effects, this convoy is the 5th in a series of land convoys and sea flotillas to unrelentlessly make a loud moral statement on Israel’s horrendous crimes in Gaza and to inspire international public opinion to END THE SIEGE. In the words of Nelson Mandela, “justice to the Palestinians, has become the greatest moral issue of our time”

Where world leaders have failed miserably, civil society must take over the initiative to END THE OCCUPATION. To paraphrase Robert Fisk, “Western leaders are too cowardly to help save lives. It is a fact that it is ordinary people, activists, call them what you will, who now take decisions to change events.”

VPM calls upon all peace loving Malaysians to support and widely publicise this humanitarian mission. The land stealing, ethnic cleansing and inhumane treatment of an entire people based on the racist ideology of Zionism is abominable. Freeing Palestine is not simply about restoring a small piece of territory between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River, but is all about fighting for the treasured values of peace, freedom, social justice and democracy.

Let us all together be part of this peaceful civil society initiative to FREE PALESTINE AND END THE OCCUPATION, and galvanise our families and friends to hop on board this month long “LAND CONVOY TO GAZA”.

VIVA Palestina Malaysia’s Boycott Israel Walkabout

PRESS RELEASE ON VIVA PALESTINA MALAYSIA’s BOYCOTT ISRAEL WALKABOUT

Kuala Lumpur, 24th January 2010…….Viva Palestina Malaysia (VPM) members, family and friends donned ‘Boycott Israel’ t shirts while taking in a leisurely morning stroll amidst the cool crisp morning air and lush green surroundings of Taman Bukit Kiara. The walk was aimed at encouraging the public to boycott Israel as well as 4 companies which support the Zionist regime through their manufacturing and business operations.

As part of sustained efforts to support the Palestinian cause for freedom and justice, Viva Palestina Malaysia (formerly known as COMPLETE – Coalition of Malaysian NGOs against Persecution of Palestinians) joins the worldwide call for a boycott of Israel.

The Sunday walk was the third activity in a series of ‘Boycott Israel’ events held by VPM starting with our Boycott Israel Campaign I held on 15th August at Menara DBKL followed by a ‘Family and Friends Day’ at Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall on November 14th.

Viva Palestina Malaysia’s activities reinforce the message that was relayed by last year’s ‘Criminalising War’ Conference in Kuala Lumpur at which Y.A. Bhg Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and other prominent speakers like George Galloway and Cynthia Mckinney emphasised the need for perpetrators of war crimes and genocide to be brought to justice. At the very least, there must be efforts made to result in these criminals being ostracized by the world community. The boycott instrument is one such effort which has worked successfully in the past, particularly against the Apartheid regime in South Africa.

We believe measures such as boycotting will isolate and compel Israel to seriously negotiate to end the tragedy leading to the creation of a free and independent state of Palestine.

Church Arson

PRESS RELEASE

The cowardly and utterly senseless act of a group of misguided, chauvinistic bigots in torching at least three churches in the Klang Valley this morning must be condemned in no uncertain terms by all peace loving Malaysians.

This act of  arson, committed presumably in the name of Islam desecrates the very religion it purports to protect. The Holy Quran unequivocally  prohibits destroying the houses of worship of all religions, as warned in Surah Al-Hajj, Verse 40.

“… Had not Allah checked the excesses and aggression of one set of people by means of another, surely would be destroyed monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, in which the name of Allah is commemorated …”

During the reign of Umar ibn Al-Khattab, the second righteous caliph, the religious freedom of the citizens of Ilya (Jerusalem) and the sanctity of their synagogues and places of worship were confirmed: “This is the protection which the slave-servant of Allah, Umar, the Commander of the Believers, extends to the people of Ilya: The safeguarding of their lives, properties, churches, crosses, and of their entire community. Their churches cannot be occupied, demolished, or damaged, nor are their crosses or anything belonging to them to be touched. They will never be forced to abandon their religion, nor will they be oppressed …” (At-Tabari, Tarikh, Vol III, p. 609, ed. Dar Al-Ma`arif, Egypt.)

In the light of these tragic turn of events, the Muslim Professionals Forum:

1.      Demand the authorities to immediately conduct an impartial and thorough investigation to identify , apprehend and punish  the perpetrators of this despicable violence lest the country spirals into a vicious cycle of retaliatory acts which would fracture the very fabric of Malaysian civil society.

2.      Urge the authorities  to either refuse or revoke the permit for the planned demonstration in order to contain the heightened emotions and sensitivities  from among the Muslim quarters, angered by the recent high court decision on the usage of the word Allah.

3.      Urge individuals, organisations and political parties to refrain  from further issuing  provocative and inflammatory statements related to the high court verdict.

4.      Urge all Malaysians to emphatise and stand in solidarity with our Christian community in their hour of grief and need.

5.      Urge all peace loving Malaysians to maintain composure and let cool heads prevail.

May Allah guide us all  in this most troubling times.
